Frank Zappa - First Zappa Concert!

Carlos Hagen Presents

     Mount St. Mary's Concert KPFK-FM

Mount St. Mary's, Los Angeles, CA, USA

May 19th, 1963 (T-1106)

Pre-FM Soundboard Recording

Encoded: FLAC & MP3@320 Kbps

Lineage: Mics and Recorder unknown> Cassette generation unknown > Playback Deck: Tascam 130 > Nikko 32 Band EQ > Akai DR16 Digital Hard Disk Recorder > HHB CDR-800 Compact Disc Recorder > CDR > WAV >CD Wave Editor > FLAC

Something a lot of people don't know is that the first public performance of Frank Zappa's own music was caught on tape and broadcast on KPFK-FM!!! Here is a great copy of that tape, a pre-FM from the KPFK archive. I often see this tape listed as having B or B+ sound quality, but it's actually a very strong A-. And it's stereo!!! This CD-r release is from a cassette tape that I got in trade many years ago from a fellow trader in California who claims to have a KPFK archive tape.

It still stands as John Lennon's most daring live performance. The night he and Yoko Ono stepped onstage with Frank Zappa's Mothers during one of the final shows of the Fillmore East, 1971. Lennon released the tapes on 'Sometime in New York City' in 1972. Zappa re-edited the material 20 years later for 'Playground Psychotics'.

Both mixes differ and have their own strengths. But either version of Lennon & The Mothers' opening cover, the Cavern Club-era "Well (Baby Please Don't Go)," is simply one of John Lennon's finest live recordings. Yoko detractors routinely dismiss this entire show because of her equal presence. Instead... it might be her shining hour, marked by her effective timing, fearless vocal punctuation and 2-ton balls - a requirement for live avant-garde. It would be decades before Sonic Youth and Yamatsuka Eye would make this show's raw guitar feedback and genre-shattering vocals appear cool, though... this history witnessing crowd seemed to get it. Say what you will about the credibility of their experimentation's together, Lennon & Ono's antics introduced millions to their first taste ("Revolution #9") of anti-music.

This includes 13 (+ 1 bonus) selections from performances between 1976 and 1984. The band members also change in each age group, so it’s a good place to listen. Of course there is Terry Bozzio in 1976 and Steve Vai in the 1980 US tour. As a special bonus, an acoustic guitar jam with Eric Clapton performed at Zappa’s home in New York in 1967 is also included! There are almost no Frank Zappa press items, so it’s a valuable piece!
